DESCRIPTION

The CREQ is a 3-band EQ with gain and level controls. Its circuitry is closely inspired by classic ‘CR’ mixers, now recreated in 500 Series format.

The CR series of mixers became popular in the 1990s as some of the first affordable, fully featured mixing consoles, finding their way into countless productions from the era. They became particularly associated with early drum and bass, where their gain and EQ were pushed to add raw analogue warmth and a recognisable hard-clipping punch to basslines and breakbeats.

Pushing the input into overdrive creates a gritty, compressed sound that makes everything from sub basslines and mid-range Reeses to hi-hats really bite. An aggressive 3-band analogue EQ provides sharp sweeping highs, raw mids and low-end sculpting, with a character that can be difficult to authentically reproduce in software.

In 500 Series format, the ‘CR’ sound can be enjoyed in a more portable, reliable and flexible form, whether for straightforward processing and colouring or more creative uses such as parallel processing, complex effects chains and feedback loops.

The CREQ also features relay-based bypass with LED indication, a Level attenuation control for matching output level when gain is applied, and a clip LED indicator.

True to the original CR mixers, the gain control will likely introduce noise dependent on source. This is normal behaviour, either embrace and enjoy or use external gating to lessen.
